SOME RULES

Attendance

Regular and punctual attendance at school is essential to the progress and level of achievement of every pupil and is encouraged by all staff. If a pupil is absent through illness, parents are required to inform the school on the first morning of absence. If a pupil is likely to be absent for more than a few days, teachers and the office need to be notified as early as possible to allow teachers chance to prepare work for the pupil. The school does not guarantee to prepare advance work without adequate notice. For absence other than through illness, prior agreement should be made with the Headteacher or class teacher.

Discipline

Pupils are expected to be well-mannered, tolerant, honest, considerate of other people and other people's property. They are expected to work to a high level in the classroom and they are expected to make every effort to be punctual (although it is accepted that occasional delays are inevitable in a busy city).

Occasionally pupils do not behave as we would wish them to. Sanctions such as disapproval in the case of our younger pupils or a verbal reprimand in the case of the older pupils are usually sufficient to bring about the required change in behaviour. In extreme cases it may be necessary to deny the child access to a favourite club or activity or to keep them in school during the mid morning or lunch time break. If more serious disciplinary procedures were required, we would of course ask to meet the parents in order to resolve the problem.

Discipline is most effective when parents and the school work together to bring about desirable behaviour and we would therefore consult with parents at the earliest opportunity.

ACADEMIC PROGRESS - COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS

The evaluation and assessment of children's academic and general progress is an integral part of the child's life in school. The communication of this information takes the following forms:

1. Parents' Evenings

During each of the three terms parents will be invited to attend a parents' evening. Here parents can meet with teachers and discuss their child's progress and work. These will occur just before the half term break in the first term, after the half term break in the third term and at the end of the academic year.

2. Reports

Parents will receive two written reports of their child's progress during the year. These will be taken home in December and just before the end of the school year in June. Reports will outline the pupil's progress in all areas of the curriculum and are written by the teachers responsible.

3. Individual Appointments

Parents are able to make an appointment to see a member of staff at any time during the school year to discuss the progress of their child if they feel it is necessary.

Information to parents

Parents Handbook: A paper publication containing all relevant information about the school is available to new parents from the school office.

Weekly Newsletter: A newsletter is sent out via e-mail each week. This newsletter outlines events which concern the school and also reports on general items of interest. A hard copy will be displayed on the school notice board and also available for collection from the school entrance hall.

PTA Newsletter: The PTA Newsletter is distributed regularly to all parents and contains details of PTA events.

Letters: Letters to parents are sent out as the need arises by class teachers, and the Headteacher.

Home/School book: Each child will have a Home/School book in which the teacher will communicate to parents the work being carried out each week, and in which the parents may communicate with the teacher if desired. . The electronic version of this is also sent out each week to all parents.

School Notice Board: Our school notice board is a very useful means of communication between staff and parents and also among parents. Please note that any parent wishing to place a notice on the board should first notify the school office or Headteacher.

School Website: The school Website is updated regularly by teachers and pupils. All information of general interest about the school is included in this site. Personal information such as names and addresses or photos are not published on the site without the consent of the parents or teachers concerned.

Parents Telephone Directory: A telephone directory listing the names of children and addresses and telephone numbers of all consenting parents is published by the school administration soon after the beginning of each year and updated regularly. This is only for use by parents and numbers should not be given out to anyone else without permission.

School Calendar: A detailed school calendar listing all planned events and holidays is published each year and given to all pupils of BISB.

Parent involvement

Our school was the result of parental initiative, and we therefore warmly welcome parental involvement in our school. Parents can help in a variety of ways, for example by assisting on a school excursion, helping in the library, running an extra-curricular activity or listening to children reading in class. If you would like to help we would love to hear from you.

Parent/Teacher Association

Parents are also most welcome to become involved in helping the school and the children through the medium of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The PTA has an elected committee of parents representing children of all ages. All parents are automatically members of the PTA as soon as their child attends the school.

Whilst the PTA can provide a channel for parents to express to the school their ideas or concerns, that is not its main function. It is principally involved with organising and helping to run events for the children such as Halloween, Christmas parties and the like, and from time to time social events at which parents are able to meet one another. Some fund-raising is carried out in order to pay for these occasions and any spare money may be used to buy small extras which would directly benefit the children at school.

HEALTH, INSURANCE AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Health

The health and safety of each child is of paramount importance to the school. However, accidents may occasionally occur or children may be unwell during the school day. In either event every effort will be made to ensure that parents are notified immediately. The emergency contact numbers provided by parents are used to notify parents or their nominated representative. In the event of emergency treatment being required, should it prove impossible to make contact with the parents, the school will proceed with the emergency treatment with a suitable doctor or hospital, providing that the medical release form has been returned to the school. Please ensure, therefore, that you have returned your medical release form to the school. It is also very important that the contact numbers on the medical release form are regularly updated by parents so that we have access to you or your nominated contact during the day.

1. General

If your child has any allergies or suffers from any condition such as asthma, please ensure you discuss this directly with the class teacher.

2. Medication

School policy does not allow school staff to dispense medicine to pupils without written consent from the parents. Any medicine coming into school must also be clearly labelled with the child's name and prescribed dosage. No responsibility can be accepted if a dose is missed. Asthma inhalers must be marked with the child's name and handed to the class teacher for safe keeping.

3. Illness

Pupils who are obviously not well, who have sickness or diarrhoea or who have a fever should not be sent to school. In the case of communicable diseases the school should be notified immediately, so that other parents can be informed.

First aid and emergency procedure

The school will administer whatever first aid measures seem necessary if a child is sick or injured at school. The school will then telephone the parents to have them proceed with any further treatment needed. If neither parent nor the parents' emergency contact person can be contacted, the school will proceed with whatever measures seem necessary.

Fire Drills

There are regular fire drills to ensure safety in the event of a real emergency. Teachers and children are made aware of the location of fire extinguishers at the school, the alarm system, the means of evacuating the building, and of course the need for calm and quiet at all times. After evacuating the building children will line up with their teacher and the register will be called. Fire drills will be held at least once per term.

Passenger insurance: Excursions by bus are covered by this insurance.

Accident insurance: Persons involved in any school activities are covered against accidents by the school’s insurance policies.
