We are very busy in our Year 1 and Year 2 classes, and
it comes as a surprise to most pupils that we no longer have as much
time
for
play
activities!
Here are some elements of our busy week:
On Mondays we have Our weekly assembly with all of Key Stages 1 and
2
On Wednesdays the children all take homework, which they have a week
to do, and is either topic related or is broader – language and
maths based.
On Thursdays we have our music lessons – this is great fun and
very popular, as well as being very educational!
Also on Thursdays we go swimming at the Castle Club (on a rota basis)
and the children need to come dressed for P.E.
We also have our library time on Thursday
afternoons. This is where the children can browse amongst the books
and choose one to take home.
On Fridays there is a lot going on :
Our weekly spelling test – related to the words we have
been learning about in class.
Home/school book – where the children draw and write about
something they have done in the week, and where I give the parents
a run down of what we have done, and what is coming up next week.
Our weekly PE lesson so the children are required to come dressed
appropriately.
Our children all have French everyday (except Thursdays), and really
grow in confidence and ability over the year.
In Year 2 we are working on the good foundations of the previous year.
The children will be growing in their ability to speak clearly and confidently
in different contexts, with attention to detail, and increasing focus
They will develop their listening skills in one to one and group
situations, following instructions and making appropriate responses
We particularly work on our speaking and listening skills through
stories, songs and sharing times.
Reading:
We are discovering the difference between fiction, non-fiction
and poetry books, and will continue on this throughout the year,
becoming more familiar with each type
Children will be developing their reading strategies in order
to increase fluency, and also reading for pleasure and information
Writing:
We will be working on different aspects of writing – composition,
spelling and punctuation, handwriting and presentation.
In MATHS over the year we will cover the following:
Year 1
Year 2
Our Year 1 children continue to use
number in their everyday lives. They are introduced to a wide variety
of mathematical vocabulary, such as addition and measuring terms.
At this stage in their development the children are moving from
the concrete stage where they need practical help to solve problems,
to the abstract stage where they use mental strategies to solve
simple problems using counting, addition, subtraction, doubling,
halving. They begin to explain their methods.
We encourage the children to see mathematics as a living subject
and to be able to reason and understand the processes they are using. Our
maths topics involve continual progression in the teaching of time,
shape, capacity and measuring, as well as simple data handling
Counting, reading, writing and ordering numbers to 100
Describing and extending sequences, such as odd and even numbers,
and counting in 1s, 2s and 10s
Subtraction and addition, and their relation to one another
Halving and doubling
Measure:
Estimating, measuring and comparing length, mass and capacity using
standard units, choosing appropriate equipment and being able to
use it.
Shape / space:
Using mathematical names for common 2D and 3D shapes
Sorting shapes and describing some of their features o Using
mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement
